Holder Strikes Out the Side In Fall Scrimmage Victory
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State junior All-American Jonathan Holder struck out the side in the final inning Friday night at Dudy Noble Field as Black won, 7-5, vs. Gray in a six-inning scrimmage. The Bulldogs return to Dudy Noble Saturday at 12 p.m. for the program’s 18th fall intrasquad exhibition.
Gray drew first blood in the bottom of the first when junior Derrick Armstrong tallied an infield single, sprinted to third on a wild pickoff throw and scored on a grounder by redshirt freshman Daniel Garner.
Black tied it up in the next inning when junior Seth Heck earned a leadoff walk. After senior Alex Detz recorded his own base on balls, Heck tagged up from second and made it to third on a flyout to right field by redshirt junior Wes Rea. Heck then scored on a sacrifice fly to left by junior Jake Vickerson.
Tied at one, Black broke the game open with a three-run third. Following singles by redshirt junior Zack Randolph and senior C.T. Bradford, senior Brett Pirtle connected on a double to the wall in right. Randolph scored easily and Bradford tapped the dish when the cutoff man was missed. Pirtle then came full circle on an RBI single by Detz. Heck earned his second walk of the night to join Detz, who scored himself on an RBI single by Rea.
Armstrong scored his second unearned run of the game for Gray in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to three runs. The home team climbed back into it in the fourth thanks to a two-RBI double by freshman Reid Humphreys, which scored sophomore Kyle Hann and redshirt freshman Cody Brown.
Junior Cody Walker added an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single to left, scoring Detz.
Gray responded with an RBI double by Garner and the final run of the game came on an RBI double by Bradford.
The final run of the game came when Heck scored on a double by Bradford.
Leading 7-5 in the final inning, Holder struck out the side in order for the win.
