LOS ANGELES, Calif. – As the Jack Kramer Invitational got underway on Thursday, the Mississippi State women’s tennis team advanced a singles player and a doubles team into the round of 16 of the tournament.

Third-seeded Georgiana Patrasc notched a win for State in her first singles action, as she rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 blanking over Melissa Baker of Cal Santa Barbara. Patrasc had received a first-round bye in the tournament and the victory launches the All-SEC and 76th-ranked sophomore into the round of 16 on Friday.

In first round doubles action Thursday, Patrasc and partner Roseline Dion snatched an 8-3 victory over the doubles team of Baker and April Scatliffe UCSB. That win advances the MSU duo into the round of 16 of that draw as well.

In State’s only other singles action Thursday, the senior Dion dropped a tough match against Kristine Kouyoumjian of Loyola Marymount 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. Dion went on to play first round consolation singles but fell in a heartbreaker to Mikayla Morkel-Brink of San Diego 6-2, 1-6, 1-0(7) in a hard-fought battle.

Action in the Jack Kramer Invitational will continue on Friday with doubles, as Dion and Patrasc will play against fourth-seeded Simona Parajova and Stefanie Tan of TCU at 11 a.m. CT. Patrasc will then play against Mimi Fotopoulos, also of TCU, in the singles round of 16, beginning at 2 p.m. CT.

Also beginning Friday is the Lakewood Ranch Invitational in Sarasota, Fla., where the remainder of MSU’s squad will be competing this weekend.
