TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – On the final day of the Roberta Alison Fall Classic Saturday, the Mississippi State women’s tennis team found more success, as one player claimed the singles title in her draw and another snatched the consolation crown in another draw.
Junior Naomi Tran emerged as the only undefeated Bulldog on the weekend in singles, as she notched two victories on Friday and finished out her sweep on Saturday against Annie Wierda of Michigan 6-2, 6-3, winning the Courtney McLane Draw.
In another final, State sophomore Georgiana Patrasc, ranked nationally at No. 76, fell in a tough title match against No. 34 Beatrice Gumulya of Clemson who edged her out 6-4, 7-5 in the Meritt Emry Draw on Saturday.
True freshman Bulldog Timea Guibe proved victorious Saturday, winning the consolation crown of the Rebecca Baum Draw after cruising past Abigail Owens of LSU 6-2, 6-0.
In other singles action on the final day of action, veteran Alexandra Perper dropped her consolation final against 53rd-ranked Klara Vyskocilova of Tulane 6-3, 6-3 in the Taylor Lindsey Draw. Bulldog Rosie Dion also dropped her consolation final against Furman’s Amanda Murray 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles, State’s 48th-ranked team Perper and Tran advanced to the semifinals of their draw on Friday but faced two very hard-fought matches on Saturday. The duo fell 8-2 to Jessy Rompies and Beatrice Gumulya of Clemson in the semifinals and then, competing in a third place consolation contest, dropped a tight 8-6 decision to Veronica Corning and Alicia Barnett of Northwestern.
the MSU duo of Petra Ferancova and Patrasc started off with a win Saturday in their consolation semifinal match against Jessica Perez and Julia Norlin of Loyola Marymount 8-4 but fell to Gabrielle Otero and Skylar Holloway of LSU 8-5 in a tough consolation finals match of the Melissa Day Draw.
The Bulldog doubles team of Dion and Guibe dropped their consolation semifinal to Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Rasheeda McAdoo of Georgia Tech 8-5 but rebounded with a defeat over Nayara Moraes and Irina Constantinide of Middle Tennessee 8-3 in the seventh place match in the Bianca Svensson Draw.
