TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – As the first day of the 2013 Roberta Alison Fall Classic got underway Friday, the Mississippi State women’s tennis team found success, as a doubles team and two singles players claimed victories to advance them in the event.
All-SEC and 76th-ranked MSU sophomore Georgiana Patrasc led the way in singles. She began the tournament with a defeat over Courtney Colton of Vanderbilt 6-4, 6-2. The victory moved her into the semifinals of the Meritt Emery Draw, where she defeated Noel Scott of LSU 7-6(5), 6-2 to advance to Saturday’s title match.
Junior veteran Naomi Tran also advanced to the finals of her draw in the event, defeating Jessie Grace of MTSU 6-2, 6-2 to open the day. In the semifinals of the Courtney McLane Draw, she then claimed another win over Jessica Perez of Loyola Marymount 6-3, 7-5.
State’s 48th-ranked doubles team Alexandra Perper and Tran swiped a win over Kristin Lewis and Carita Moolman of Samford 8-6 in the lone round of doubles that was played Friday. The victory placed the Bulldog duo in the semifinals of the Robin Stephenson Draw on Saturday.
In Perper’s first singles action on Friday, she dropped a tough match to the nation’s No. 7-ranked Yana Koroleva of Clemson 6-1, 7-5. But Perper rebounded very well, coming back with a upset over No. 51 Lauren Mira of Vanderbilt 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation semifinals of the Taylor Lindsey Draw.
