Walker’s Two-RBI Single Give Black 5-4 Win Vs. Gray
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Deadlocked in a 3-3 tie, Mississippi State junior Cody Walker drove in two with a single to left as Black defeated Gray by a 5-4 margin in a five-inning scrimmage Tuesday night. The Bulldogs scrimmage again Friday at 4 p.m. at Dudy Noble Field.
Besides Walker, team captain Wes Rea went 2-for-3 and junior newcomer Jake Vickerson went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk for Black. Joining Vickerson with RBIs were redshirt freshman Daniel Garner and sophomore Kyle Hann.
Gray jumped out to an early 3-0 lead courtesy of some costly defensive miscues by Black. Following a leadoff single to the gap in left by senior C.T. Bradford and a passed ball which moved him to second, senior Brett Pirtle chopped a grounder to first base and then reached first safely when the toss from first to the pitcher went wide. The error allowed Bradford to score.
After a single by senior Demarcus Henderson which moved Pirtle to third, senior Alex Detz grounded it to second base, pushing Henderson across the dish for the second run. Henderson then scored the third run after a walk to redshirt junior Zack Randolph to load the bases and an RBI groundout by freshman Gavin Collins.
Trailing by three in the bottom of the first frame, Black responded with a three spot of their own. The home team started off with junior Derrick Armstrong walking, junior Matthew Britton getting hit by a pitch and Rea singling to right. With the sacks stuffed, Garner and Hann recorded back-to-back RBIs via groundouts, scoring Armstrong and Britton. Next, Rea scored on a two-out Vickerson single which sneaked through the 4-3 hole on the right side.
Tied at three, Walker drove in Garner and Hann on a hard-hit single to left for the game-winning hit.
Pirtle scored the fourth run for Gray in the ninth, but ultimately the visitors left the tying run on third base to end the game.
