Holders Throws 2 2/3 Shutout Innings In Scrimmage
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Junior All-American closer Jonathan Holder struck out four in 2 2/3 scoreless innings as Black squeaked by Gray with a narrow 2-1 victory Thursday afternoon in the ninth Mississippi State scrimmage of the fall at Dudy Noble Field. The two squads battle again Friday at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
On top of Holder, Jacob Billingsley tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball with a strikeout for Black. After redshirt sophomore righty Preston Brown allowed just one run in 3.1 frames for Gray, the duo of lefty Jacob Lindgren and right-hander Ben Bracewell combined for three innings of shutout pitching, striking out five.
At the plate, freshman catcher Gavin Collins and senior starting pitcher CT Bradford each went 2-for-3, while junior transfer Cody Walker had a base knock as well for Black. For Gray, team captain Wes Rea knocked out two singles, redshirt freshman Daniel Garner tallied an RBI single and freshman Reid Humphreys cranked out a double to the gap in left.
The seven-inning exhibition started when senior Demarcus Henderson set the table with a leadoff walk and a stolen base. The outfielder sprinted to third on a single to left by Rea and scored the game’s first run on an RBI base knock to right by Garner.
Gray tied the game in the top of the fourth thanks to an RBI double to the wall in left courtesy of Collins. The two bagger scored senior Alex Detz, who reached on a walk and stole second to get to scoring position.
Tied at one in the fifth, the game-winning run scored when redshirt freshman Cody Brown walked, stole second on scored on a hard-hit grounder to third by Walker.
