STARKVILLE, Miss. – Six innings was not enough to decide a winner Friday night at Dudy Noble Field, as Black tied Gray, 4-4, in a six-stanza scrimmage in front of an estimated 300 fans.

Senior Brett Pirtle and junior Matthew Britton led the way for Gray, with the top two in the order going a combined 4-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs, two doubles and a pair of walks. For Black, the top three combo of junior Jake Vickerson, senior Demarcus Henderson and junior Seth Heck all recorded a hit and a run scored.

On the mound, the junior group of Will Cox, Jacob Lindgren and Wes Stokes combined to toss four hitless innings with six strikeouts for Gray. For Black, senior Ben Bracewell made his fall scrimmage debut with a scoreless third inning.

Black started quickly in the bottom of the first, loading the bases thanks to a leadoff single by Vickerson, Heck getting hit by a pitch and redshirt junior Wes Rea drawing a walk. With the bases juiced, redshirt freshman Daniel Garner drove in Vickerson for the game’s first run. Senior CT Bradford followed it up with an RBI single.

Gray cut the deficit in half in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double down the line in left by Pirtle. Junior transfer Cody Walker, who had reached base previously via a walk, hustled all the way from first base to put the visitors on the board.

Black extended its lead in the third, which started when Henderson singled to right. The outfielder advanced on a fielding error by the right fielder and moved to third when Heck ripped a grounder through the five-six hole to put runners on the corners. Rea walked to load the bases, before Garner put it in play with a grounder to shortstop. The shortstop let the ball go through his legs to the outfield, as Henderson scored. Heck then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 in favor of the home team.

Gray fought back in the fourth, with Pirtle and Walker drawing two-out walks. Britton then drove Pirtle in with an RBI base hit up the middle. The visitors tied the game in the top of the sixth thanks to another RBI by Britton, who then scored the fourth run for Gray when taking third on a wild pitch and scoring on a throwing error to third by Black’s catcher.
