STARKVILLE, Miss. – On Tuesday, Malcolm Johnson became one of 29 players nationwide to be named to the 2013 John Mackey Award midseason watch list.

Since 2000, this award has been given to the top collegiate tight end and is named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey.  The winner will be announced on Dec. 12 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show, which will be televised on ESPNU.

This past year, Notre Dame’s Tyler Eifert was the recipient.

Johnson, a junior from Tuscaloosa, Ala., is one of three SEC players on the list, joining Arkansas’ Hunter Henry and Georgia’s Arthur Lynch.

On the year, Johnson has caught 10 passes for 112 yards. In the season opener against Oklahoma State, he had four catches for 55 yards. For his career, he has 29 receptions for 465 yards and four touchdowns.

After defeating Bowling Green this past weekend for homecoming, Mississippi State (3-3) is off this week before returning to action Thursday, Oct. 24 at home against Kentucky in a nationally-televised ESPN showdown set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT.
