AUSTIN, Texas – An early weather delay didn't dampen the Mississippi State women's golf team as freshman Jessica Peng's freshman-record round tied her for first and led the team to a share of fourth following Sunday's opening round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational.

After the lowest 54-hole score by a freshman in the previous tournament, Peng followed with a 5-under-par 67 round to set the lowest freshman 18-hole score on Sunday. Peng opened her round with a birdie and added five more to take a share of the top spot.

Her stellar round led MSU, the reigning Team of the Week, to a 4-under-par 284 on the rain-soaked University of Texas Golf Course.

“We had a great team day,” fourth-year head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “Jessica Peng played so well and Rica Tse was unbelievable. The resilience we showed today is what we must practice to be champions. We are getting it done.”

Tse notched a 3-under-par 69 to secure a share of eighth and the second-best score in the Bulldog lineup. Tse showed great perseverance after finding trouble on the opening hole, following up with back-to-back birdies and six for the round.

Junior Ally McDonald and Ji Eun Baik each posted 2-over-par 74 first rounds for MSU. The All-American McDonald bounced back from two consecutive bogeys on holes 8 and 9 to birdie two of the following four holes.

Mary Langdon Gallagher rounded out the MSU lineup with a 77. Blaise Carabello, playing as an individual competitor, also carded a 77.

Miami jumped out to a five-stroke lead with a 12-under-par 276. The Hurricanes' Dani Darquea claimed a share of the first-round leaderboard with Peng.

The Bulldogs will tee off Monday's second round at 8:54 a.m. CST and be paired with SMU and No. 20 Tulane on No. 1. Carabello starts one group before at 8:45 a.m. CST.
