BATON ROUGE, La. – A Sunday afternoon struggle on the Bayou didn’t fall Mississippi State’s way as the Bulldogs (9-9, 0-4) fell in straight sets to the LSU Tigers (13-3, 3-1) in the Maravich Assembly Center.

“We have to execute better. That’s all it comes down to,” Bulldog head coach Jenny Hazelwood said. “We simply just did not play well enough to win on the road. With two home matches next weekend, we have to correct our mistakes and get turned around before getting into the heart of conference play.”

After the Tigers took the first two points of the match, MSU could never narrow the margin. The Bulldogs began a surge late in the set but the eight-point deficit was too much to overcome as LSU won 25-20. Freshman Kimmy Gardiner began her stellar day with four kills, a dig and a block in the opening stanza.

An early kill by the rookie in the second set helped State build a 9-5 advantage before a 13-3 run by LSU stole the lead that the Bulldogs could never regain. Gardiner added another five kills and two digs but it was not enough as the Tigers won 25-18.

Momentum was solely on LSU’s side of the court for the final set as the Tigers jumped out to a 12-4 lead and never let up. State surrendered the final frame 25-18.

Gardiner finished the day with 13 kills, seven digs and a block for 13.5 points. Sophomores Alex Warren and Taylor Scott also contributed seven and six kills, respectively. Senior Dani McCree tacked on six more.

Scott also added 10 digs to go along with Roxanne McVey’s 17, while Suzanne Horner turned in 29 assists.

Next up, the Bulldogs return home to face South Carolina and Tennessee on Oct. 18 and 20 in the Newell-Grissom Building.
