STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fresh off a record-setting victory in its home tournament, the Mississippi State women’s golf team looks to carry the momentum into its final tournament of the Fall, the 40th annual Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.
The three-day, three-round event begins Sunday at the par-72, 6,143-yard University of Texas Golf Club.
“Excited to be back at Texas with a deeper squad,” MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “I am looking for another solid tournament and the opportunity to play with No. 1 UCLA and Texas in the first round is monumental.”
MSU, the reigning Golfweek.com Team of the Week, will compete against 17 other teams, including four ranked in the Top 20 of the latest Golfweek.com poll. No. 1 UCLA, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 16 Iowa State and No. 20 Tulane comprise the field along with host Texas, Denver, New Mexico, Tulsa, UTSA, SMU, Miami, Tennessee, Furman, Princeton, TCU, San Diego State and UNLV.
Brown-Lemm returns to her alma mater with a talented lineup that is led by the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational winner and 2013 All-American Ally McDonald. The Fulton, Miss., native won her third-career event by firing a 9-under-par 207 that was one shot shy of tying her school record tournament total.
The fabulous freshmen duo of Jessica Peng and Ji Eun Baik will look to build on their early success for the Bulldogs. Peng fell one shot behind McDonald at “The Waverly” by posting a school record for lowest tournament score by a freshman.
The Bulldogs tee off the opening round Sunday at 8:45 a.m. CST with Brown-Lemm’s squad paired with No. 1 UCLA and Texas on hole one.
