TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Led by the play of senior Malte Stropp, the Mississippi State men’s tennis squad placed a singles player in the quarterfinals and a pair of doubles teams in round of 16 after Friday action at the 2013 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships.

Doubles kicked off competition Friday with the sixth-ranked State duo of Jordan Angus and Stropp battling UAB’s Nick Ianuzzi and Luiz Pinto. MSU’s top-seeded duo dominated the match from start to finish, advancing to the round of 16 with an 8-0 victory. Following suit was the Bulldog tandem of Florian Lakat and Tassilo Schmid, who defeated Samford’s Elliott Barnwell and Liam Sullivan 8-6 to also advance to the round of 16 as well.

Stropp headlined Friday singles play for MSU with two victories to vault himself into Saturday’s quarterfinals. The 40th-ranked and third-seeded Bulldog veteran battled Troy’s Sami Ghorbel in a three-set battle. After dropping the first, Stropp roared back to take the second set 6-2. Stropp claimed victory when Ghorbel retired three games into the third set due to injury, giving the Bulldog a 4-6, 6-2, 3-0(ret.).

The Dusseldorf, Germany, native then advanced to the quarterfinals with ease, shutting out UAB’s Rafael Rondino in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.

MSU’s Angus also made an appearance in the round of 16 after defeating New Orleans’ Christoffer Applegren in impressive fashion 6-0, 6-1. Angus’ next matchup came against Ole Miss’ seventh-ranked and top-seeded Nik Scholtz. Despite forcing a tiebreaker in the first set, Angus dropped the opening set and the match 7-6(5), 6-2.
