Bulldogs Fight Back For 10th Place Finish At Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate
MSU’s team score of 43-over 883 earned a tie with Texas-San Antonio for 10th-place overall, while No. 4 Alabama shot an 11-under 829 to win on its home course.
“Today we did a few things a little bit better and I certainly think we can still be a pretty good golf team in time,” MSU coach Clay Homan said. “We need a greater level of consistency that comes from being fundamentally sound in all areas. We will use the 18 days we have before our next tournament to improve as a team.”
Despite turning in the best Bulldog score of the day (70), senior Chad Ramey finished a couple spots shy of a Top 25 card. The Fulton native’s 7-over 217 tied for 27th at the Old Overton Country Club, breaking a streak of five straight regular-season Top 25’s for Ramey.
In his first collegiate start, true freshman Ben Follett-Smith turned in a 37th-place card after notching an 11-over 221. Follett-Smith’s score improved with each round at the Jerry Pate from a 76 and 74 in the first two rounds, respectively.
After finishing 31st last time out, senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan notched a 13-over 223 to tie for 44th overall.
Homan’s squad will tee up again on Oct. 26-27 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., for the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate. MSU won the event a year ago.
