STARKVILLE, Miss. – With fall play in full swing, the Mississippi State men’s tennis squad travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Alabama-hosted 2013 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships this week.

The 13-team tournament begins Thursday, Oct. 10, and runs until Monday, Oct. 14. The clash between some of the Southern Region’s best players includes a singles draw of 128 and a doubles draw of 64. Singles and doubles consolation will also be played starting Friday.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs is No. 40 Malte Stropp, who is the 3rd seed in the singles draw. Following Stropp is 113th-ranked Jordan Angus (3-2 in fall play) and freshman Florian Lakat (5-2 in fall play). Rounding out the singles draw for State is freshmen Robin Haden and Tassilo Schmid. All five Bulldogs have received first-round byes.

In doubles, Angus and Stropp lead the charge as the tourney’s top-seeded doubles squad. The 6th-ranked duo captured the 2012 USTA/ITA Southern Regional doubles championship and has already earned a runner-up finish this fall at the 2013 SEC Fall Classic. Also representing the Bulldogs in doubles play will be the tandem of Lakat and Schmid, who will be playing together for the first time this fall. Both squads have earned first-round byes.
