State’s Patrasc Advances To Qualifying Finals At ITA All-American
STARKVILLE, Miss. – As the 2013 ITA/Riviera Women’s All-American Championships tournament continued Tuesday, Mississippi State’s Georgiana Patrasc claimed victory in the first two qualifying rounds in singles, including a national top 50 win, to move into the final round of that draw on Wednesday.
The 76th-ranked MSU sophomore opened play against Romy Koelzer of Clemson. Patrasc kept the lead for the majority of the first set, which she took 6-3. From there, Patrasc kept up her winning pace and took the match with a final score of 6-3, 6-4.
Patrasc then matched up against 40th-ranked Lacey Smyth of Arizona, a 9-16 seed in the draw. Patrasc swiped the first set 6-2 but fell in the second 6-4. She then responded strongly in the third, posting a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 upset victory.
Patrasc will now meet fifth-seeded and 27th-ranked Beatrice Capra of Duke in Wednesday’s final round of qualifying at 11:45 a.m. PT for the right to advance to the main draw, which begins Thursday.
In first-round qualifying doubles action Tuesday, State’s 48th-ranked tandem of Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran battled back and forth with the fourth-seeded and 21st-ranked duo of Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock of Florida, but ultimately fell 8-5. Perper and Tran will open consolation action on Wednesday at 10 a.m. PT.
