MSUís Angus/Stropp Fall In SEC Fall Classic Final
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In what was expected to be an intense top 15 doubles battle, the 2013 SEC Fall Classic doubles title match Sunday lived up to its hype. Mississippi State’s No. 6 duo of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp fell just short of the title as 13th-ranked Gonzales Austin and Ryan Lipman of tournament host Vanderbilt edged out the Bulldog tandem 8-7(9) in Nashville, Tenn.
Sunday’s match began with a series of holds between the two teams in what was a battle of two of the SEC’s dominant doubles squads. Angus and Stropp broke the trend by earning a break to go up 4-2 midway through the match.
The second-seeded State duo would remain up a break until Austin and Lipman put the match back on serve with a break of their own, cutting the MSU lead to 6-5. After Angus held to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead, Vandy fought off an MSU match-winning break to force a tiebreaker for the title.
Angus and Stropp jumped out in front early in the tiebreaker, going up 3-0. Vandy evened the score at 5-5, which then led to a back-and-forth battle between the two squads. The Commodore tandem, a 5-8 seed, eventually pulled away late to take the win 8-7(9).
“Very proud of Malte (Stropp) and Jordan (Angus) for how they fought in this tournament,” coach Per Nilsson said. “Now we have to turn our attention to practice this week and heading to Tulsa for the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday.”
The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday, Sept. 28, as they travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the 2013 ITA All-American Championships.
