Hattiesburg, Miss.– Propelled by a career-low 65, senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan tied for first with a 9-under-par 133 and helped Mississippi State to a second-place finish following Monday’s opening two rounds of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg.

Sakulpolphaisan followed his career-best round with a second-round 68 to help MSU to an 11-under-par 557 through the opening 36 holes. The Bulldogs head into Tuesday’s final 18 holes four shots back of a Louisiana-Lafayette squad that set a new 36-hole tournament record (553).

“I am extremely proud of the way our seniors came out and played today,” 11-year coach Clay Homan said. “Combined, they shot 19-under par, which is phenomenal. We started two guys (TJ Morgan and Dalton Conn) who played their first tournament in Maroon and White. I’m sure there were some nerves with them today, but I fully expect them to get back on track and play to their potential. It’s a nice start to the season, but we still have 18 holes to play and we are trailing by four strokes. So the work is not done.”

Sakulpolphaisan’s 65 tied for the eighth-lowest round in school history. He finished the opening two rounds with eight birdies and a pair of eagles on the Hattiesburg Country Club course.

Fellow senior Barrett Edens has his first Top-10 in sight as he fired a 6-under-par 136 to tie for ninth place.

Axel Boasson, a second team All-SEC selection a year ago, finished 13th Monday with a 4-under-par 138. Boasson enters Tuesday’s final 18 holes seeking his seventh-straight regular-season Top 15 card.

Rookies TJ Morgan and Dalton Conn rounded out the Bulldog scoring. Morgan, a Meridian Community College transfer, finished the opening two rounds with an 8-over 150 to tie for 71st, while the redshirt freshman Conn wrapped up the first day of his collegiate career with a 9-over 151 to tie for 75th.

Sophomore Ben Wood competed as an individual, and he fired the lowest score among individuals with a 2-under 140 to tie for 17th place.

Conn begins State’s final round as he tees off in the 9:30 a.m. group alongside ULL’s Ross Davis and South Alabama’s Blake Kelley.
