The two-day, 54-hole event from the Hattiesburg Country Club will feature 15 squads playing 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday.
“We have been working and competing extremely hard the last three weeks in preparation for our first event,” 11th-year coach Clay Homan said. “We have a group of experienced players along with a few new faces who are emerging as key contributors within our squad. We have a full schedule of tournaments this fall, playing in a total of six events in about eight weeks. We will have the opportunity to play against some top-level teams on great golf courses, so it's important that we get off to a good start in Hattiesburg by being mentally and physically sharp each and every round. If we do that, good things will happen for this team.”
In addition to host Southern Miss, Arkansas State, Houston Baptist, Jackson State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Mercer, Ole Miss, Rice, Sam Houston State, South Alabama, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas Tech and UT-San Antonio will join MSU in the 15-team field.
The streaking Bulldogs began their momentum with the Sam Hall last year, taking a runner-up finish.
During last season’s decorated run, State went 34-4 against teams competing in this year’s Sam Hall field.
Homan’s squad is returning six letter winners from a year ago, with the lone departure being Robi Calvesbert. State added four golfers from last season’s signing class, three true freshmen and one junior college transfer.
Of the new additions, JUCO transfer T.J. Morgan will see playing time right away. Morgan transferred from Meridian Community College, where he was recruited to by current MSU assistant coach Sean Covich.
State will be in the first group from Sam Hall and will tee off at 8:30 Monday morning.
