STARKVILLE, Miss. – When he took the head coaching reigns of the Mississippi State soccer program, Aaron Gordon challenged his players to step up and lead.

Senior CJ Winship accepted that challenge, and her hard work and leadership on and off the pitch has resulted in Gordon naming her the Bulldogs’ co-captain along with senior defender Morganne Grimes.

“I challenged our players to step up and be leaders. Morganne has been a great team captain and has done a great job leading our program, but CJ has also shown tremendous leadership during the preseason and into the regular season,” Gordon said. “I talked about this with our team and they were very accepting, so it is an honor to name CJ Winship a co-captain along with Morganne Grimes.”

The Ridgeland, Miss., native has been solid in goal this season for the Bulldogs, stopping 10 shots in 225 minutes. She halted eight shots, seven against Florida Gulf Coast, in last weekend’s Embassy Suites Classic to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Since transferring from UAB prior to the 2012 season, Winship has recorded 38 saves over 605 minutes and helped the team to a pair of shutouts.

Winship and the Bulldogs travel to Southeastern Louisiana Friday and wrap the weekend with a 1 p.m. kickoff at Southern Miss on Sunday.
