STARKVILLE, Miss. – For Tyler Russell, the accolades continue to pour in.

The latest for the Mississippi State senior quarterback was being named to the 2013 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation announced this past week. The award, established in 1987, is presented at the end of each season to the nation’s top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, and athletic accomplishments. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.

Past standout winners of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award include: Peyton Manning

(Tennessee, 1997); Carson Palmer (USC, 2002); Eli Manning (Ole Miss, 2003); Brady Quinn

(Notre Dame, 2006); Matt Ryan (Boston College, 2007); Colt McCoy (Texas, 2009); and

Andrew Luck (Stanford, 2011). The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award will be presented at a ceremony on December 6, 2013 in Baltimore, Md. at the Embassy Suites downtown.

The preseason national recognition is no stranger to Russell this summer, as the fifth-year senior has already been named to the watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award and Davey O’Brien Award. Last season, Russell set 11 single-season school records, completing 231 throws for 2,897 yards and two-dozen touchdowns. The 6-4, 220-pounder enters his senior campaign as the school’s all-time leader in passing efficiency (136.38), and is only one passing touchdown away from the tying the school record for passing touchdowns (38), held by Derrick Taite (1993-96).

Russell and the rest of his teammates begin the 2013 season next Saturday, August 31 in Houston, Texas, at Reliant Stadium against Oklahoma State. The Texas Kickoff Classic is set for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff and will be televised live nationally on either ABC or ESPN2. For more information on the Maroon and White, follow the program on Twitter at @HailStateFBall, like team on Facebook at Facebook.com/HailStateFootball and join the squad on Instagram at Instagram.com/HailStateFB.
