Cohen Named 2013 ABCA South Region Coach of the Year

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After guiding his alma mater to the best finish by any program in the history of Mississippi State athletics, MSU Head Baseball Coach John Cohen was named the 2013 ABCA South Region Coach of the Year, the American Baseball Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

"I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by great coaches and great players who come from great families," Cohen said.

Cohen, who was also a finalist for’s 2013 National Coach of the Year, guided the Maroon and White to a national runner-up finish, concluding State’s remarkable run with an appearance in the NCAA College World Series Championship Series against UCLA. The Bulldogs’ 51 wins (51-20) marked the second-highest win total in school history, despite having the second-toughest strength of schedule in the country according to

The fifth-year skipper oversaw an offense which finished fourth in the country in hits, led by NCAA hits leader and MLB six-round draft pick Adam Frazier (107), as well as fellow All-American and 13th overall pick Hunter Renfroe. The Diamond Dawgs also ended 2013 13th in the country in walks (287).

Defensively, State turned a school-record 80 double plays (second in the NCAA), while finishing in the top 20 nationally in earned run average (15th, 2.79), strikeouts per nine innings (10th, 8.2), hits allowed per nine innings (14th, 7.47) and WHIP (17th, 1.19).
