Bulldogs Shine On First Day Of NCAA East Prelims
Thursday at the NCAA East Preliminary at North Carolina A&T, the freshman standout from Meridian, Miss., posted the top time of the day in the qualifying round of the 400-meter hurdles at 50.63. The finals are set for Friday, with the Top 12 advancing to the nationals in Eugene, Ore.
“He’s worked extremely hard to put himself in this position,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “And I don’t think we’ve seen the best from him yet.”
Hearns wasn’t the only MSU player to dominate the day, as senior Daundre Barnaby was tops in the 400-meter dash with a season-best time of 45.71. Likewise, the finals in this event are set for tomorrow as well.
“I thought he paced himself well and made the right moves at the right time,” Dudley said.
The Lady Bulldogs saw outstanding advancement as well.
All-American Erica Bougard finished second in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 20-07.00. With her placement, she punched her ticket to the finals in Oregon beginning June 5.
On the track, All-American Jody-Ann Muir placed third in the 400-meter dash at 52.08. Her finals are set for Friday.
