Softball Places Three On NFCA All-South Region Team
MOBILE, Ala. – One day before starring in the NCAA Mobile Regional, Mississippi State placed three players on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-South Region Second Team, the organization announced Thursday. The junior trio of Logan Foulks, Sam Lenahan and Alison Owen are the first trio of Bulldogs to make the team since 2009 and represent the fourth time in school history MSU has had three on the squad.
"Our region is loaded with talent and I am extremely happy for Sam, Logan and Alison for receiving this honor," Head Coach Vann Stuedeman said. "Every player on our team contributed to these honors in one way or another, and I am extremely proud of this team’s selfless commitment to one another."
Lenahan, the MSU catcher who made the first team last season as a third baseman, is the sixth player in school history to earn back-to-back NFCA All-South Region accolades. The previous five who earned back-to-back honors eventually went on to gain All-America accolades. Having started all 54 games in the regular season, the Lawrenceville, Ga., native enters the NCAA Tournament with a .336 average, 10 home runs, 40 RBIs, 35 runs and 49 walks. The 49 base on balls currently rank sixth in the country.
Owen is the first State pitcher to be selected to the squad since four-time All-American Kellie Wilkerson did it from 1999-2002. The Newnan, Ga., native notched her first NFCA accolade after finishing the regular season with a nation-best 230-to-21 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The righty also enters NCAA Tournament play in the top 25 in fewest walks per seven innings (0.79, sixth), saves (5, 11th), fewest hits allowed per game (4.34, 15th) and strikeouts per seven innings (8.7, 23rd).
Foulks earned her first NFCA all-region honor after leading the team with 13 home runs and 51 hits. The junior hit .313 in the regular season with 38 RBIs, 30 runs scored and 20 walks.
