STARKVILLE, Miss. – Following a weekend win over No. 56 ranked Missouri, Mississippi State Lady Bulldog tennis (8-13) will once again face the Lady Tigers (9-12) Wednesday in the first round of 2013 SEC Women's Tennis Championship, which MSU is hosting at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on campus. Match time between MSU and MU us set for 10 a.m. CT Wednesday morning in the tournament's opening match.
The winner will advance to face fifth-seeded and 29th-ranked Tennessee in Thursday's second round at 11 a.m. CT. Full tournament information can be found at www.HailState.com/SECtennis and on Twitter (@SECtennis).
In Sunday's match, the Lady Bulldogs posted a 4-2 triumph against Missouri in the teams' final match of the regular season. Maroon and White veteran Alexandra Perper posted the initial victory for MSU, taking down Rachel Stuhlmann in a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 decision at the No. 2 position. Also victorious in the win for State were true freshmen Georgiana Patrasc, who rallied from 4-0 down in the first set to win at No. 1, and Sarai Flores, who overcame a 5-3 second-set deficit at No. 6, to help the Lady Bulldogs to the triumph. Lady Bulldog junior Roseline Dion clinched the team win in a down-to-the-wire battle on court 5, where she defeated Missouri’s Alex Clark 6-2, 7-6(6).
Maria Christensen and Elisha Gabb notched two singles victories for the Lady Tigers in Sunday’s competition. Christensen took down Naomi Tran of MSU 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 on court three. Gabb defeated Lady Bulldog Petra Ferancova 6-2, 6-2 on court 4.
Both teams finished the regular season with a 2-11 SEC record.
State is hosting the SEC Championship for the third time overall and first time since 2001.
“We are excited to be playing the SEC Tournament at home," said head coach Daryl Greenan. “We have been solid at the end of the season. If we maintain our level of play we have a chance to do something special this week.”
