West Point, Miss.,– Paced by four Bulldog scorecards in the Top 20, Mississippi State overtook UAB on the final hole to claim first place after the opening day of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.

The No. 28 Bulldogs shot a 1-under-par, 575 to edge out the Blazers on Monday, giving State another opportunity to pick up a win. If MSU holds on in the final round, it would be the fourth win of the season, the most since 1974-1975.

“We got off to a great start to start the day,” Coach Clay Homan said. “After that we started making some mental mistakes, which were uncharacteristic of us. So we will need to play much better tomorrow if we want to win.”

State closed out round one in fourth place, behind South Alabama’s 5-under-par pace. Homan’s squad golfed one of the best scores of the second round (288) however, to overtake the field for the top spot.

MSU finished day one with four Bulldogs in the Top 20. Juniors Axel Boasson and Chad Ramey are in the Top 10 range after 36 holes. Boasson is currently tied for fourth-place with his 2-under-par day. Ramey finished Monday at 1-under-par to leave the Fulton, Miss., native with a seventh-place tie. If Ramey finished in the Top 10 it will be his seventh Top 10 of the season.

Senior Robi Calvesbert and junior Joe Sakulpolphaisan finished round two tied for 13th and 16th respectively. Calvesbert finished the first 36 holes at 1-over par and Sakulpolphaisan finished at 2-over-par.

Rounding out the Bulldog scorecard was junior Barrett Edens, who finished with a tie for 29th on Monday. The Okolona, Miss., native shot a 5-over-par for the first two holes.

Playing as individuals from Old Waverly was freshman Ben Wood and sophomore Fletcher Johnson. Wood finished tied for 46th with a 9-over-par and Johnson finished the opening rounds at 26-over-par, for a 77th place card.

Tomorrow’s 18-hole day will see MSU tee off at 10 a.m. alongside UAB and South Alabama.
