STARKVILLE, Miss. – Trying to extend its 13-game non-conference winning streak, the Mississippi State softball team (20-9) travels to Birmingham, Ala., for a Tuesday tilt at UAB (18-7). First pitch between the two NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT at the UAB Softball Field.

The trip marks a return to the city of birth for MSU Head Coach Vann Stuedeman and Assistant Coach Alan Reach, while Assistant Coach Beth Mullins comes back to the field she starred on as a member of the Blazers from 2001-04. The game is also a homecoming for area natives Jessica Cooley (Birmingham, Ala.) and Shana Sherrod (Vestavia Hills, Ala.).

With a 13-2 record all-time against the Green and Gold, the Bulldogs will be looking to extend their undefeated record (5-0) at the UAB Softball Field. Should the Maroon and White win Tuesday, they will be two wins away from tying the school-record 16-game winning streak against non-SEC foes set back in 2006.

Led by junior right-hander Alison Owen and senior lefty Stephanie Becker, the MSU pitching staff has been a big reason for MSU’s success this season. Owen is 10-4 with a 1.39 ERA and an impressive 137-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while Becker is 6-3 with a 2.61 clip and 98 strikeouts. Overall, the Bulldogs own a 1.98 ERA, almost one point lower than last year’s 2.88 total.

On offense, the Bully Bombers are anchored by junior slugger Sam Lenahan. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native is raking at a .378 mark, and has already surpassed last year’s totals of 21 walks, seven doubles and two home runs with a 2013 tally of 27 base on balls, 10 two-baggers and seven long balls.

The Blazers, who 8-1 in Conference USA, are coming off a road sweep at Memphis this past weekend. Overall, the home team in Tuesday’s contest is led on offense by three-hole hitter Whitney Fletcher, who heads the team with a .373 average and four triples. In the circle, the Green and Gold have a trio of starters with seven-plus starts, led by Lauren Webster (7-2) and her 1.15 ERA.

Following its midweek non-conference clash, Starkville's Team returns to SEC play this weekend for a three-game series against SEC West rival Auburn. The Tigers take on the Bulldogs Friday at 6 p.m., before wrapping up the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. Admission is free for those that can attend, but for those that cannot, live video and audio streaming of the series will be available online to HailStateTV subscribers (www.HailState.com/hstvlive).
