McDonald Eyeing Top 3 Finish, Lady Bulldogs Sixth In JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational
McDonald is only four shots back of tournament-leader F. Gustafsson Spang of East Carolina entering Sunday's final round. The Fulton, Miss., native is 1-under for through two rounds. She managed par entering the final hole but carded a bogey on the 385-yard par four.
The Lady Bulldogs' 22-over 598 card is only seven strokes shy of a Top 3 finish. It ties for the fourth-lowest 36-hole score in the Ginger Brown-Lemm era and ties for ninth-lowest in MSU history.
"I saw some growth today," Brown-Lemm said. "While this is not the expected performance, we are freshman and sophomores; lessons learned in these two years are critical to their development. We are on a very good pace for exceeding all our goals, I just think we can do better."
Rica Tse and Gabi Oubre' each turned in 2-over-par 74's and are just outside the Top 25 with 18 holes remaining. Oubre' turned in a team tournament-best five birdies.
Mary Langdon Gallagher and Elena Warren rounded out the Maroon and White leaderboard with a 76 and 80, respectively. Gallagher is 10-over for the two rounds, while Warren is 13-over.
Freshman Logan Chaney is competing as an individual in the event and is 17-over after a second-round 79.
"We have so much talent, so much young talent," Brown-Lemm added. "I can't wait to see them grow and flourish. As we mature, we are moving into a very competitive position for Mississippi State women's golf."
No. 36 Campbell is the current tourney leader at 7-over-par, while Elon (+14) and East Carolina (+15) are second and third, respectively.
Final-round action begins Sunday at 7 a.m. CST with the Lady Bulldogs slated to tee off along side James Madison and Chattanooga at 7:40 a.m.
