STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Mississippi State athletic department announced Tuesday it has received a $500,000 donation from the Danny Cupit family to enhance the men's locker room at Humphrey Coliseum. The gift is part of the Bulldog Club's "Today, Tomorrow, Forever" facility initiative.

Cupit, who received his bachelor of science degree in May of 1967, is a long-time season ticket holder who has owned his own law firm in Downtown Jackson since 1977. He and his wife, Sharon, have one son, Sean, who is also a lawyer.

"I really believe strongly in what Scott Stricklin and those in the athletic department are doing in all sports at Mississippi State," said Cupit, a 1963 graduate of Provine High School. "You see the vision Scott has and his efforts in taking Mississippi State to a new level.

"I actually attended a law seminar there several months back, and they gave us a tour of the athletic facilities. I believe Rick Ray has tremendous potential, and I want recruits to see that Mississippi State can have the type of facilities other national programs have. And with a few enhancements to add to what we already have, I know that can be achieved. He has dealt with a lot of adversity this season, but that hasn't stopped him from keeping this team together and fighting hard. I just wanted to do my part to help bring the program back to the level we've enjoyed in the past."

The last time the locker room received a major renovation was following the 2003-04 campaign as part of a $1.8 million upgrade to the coliseum.

"We are very grateful for the generosity of Danny and his family," MSU athletics director Scott Stricklin said. "For us to remain competitive in the SEC, it's imperative that we maintain our facilities and continuously make enhancements to attract student-athletes. And it's gifts such as these that allow us to achieve our goals."

Ray, in his first year as head coach, is adamant this kind of donation will be beneficial in attracting the type of student-athletes it takes to have sustained success.

"I am very appreciative of Danny's generous gift to our basketball program," MSU coach Rick Ray said. "The opportunity to upgrade to our locker room is a great start to taking our program to the next level. The type of enhancements and amenities we are looking to add will help attract and develop the top student-athletes we are looking for."
