Gainesville, Fla.- Coming off of one of the best fall campaigns in the program's history, the Mississippi State Bulldogs are looking to pick up right where they left off.
The SunTrust Gator Invitational will be the site of the Bulldogs' first spring tourney, hosted by the University of Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course on Feb. 8-9.The two-day event will feature 54 holes of stroke play at the par 70, 6,701 yard course. On Saturday, 36 holes will be played and Sunday will conclude the final 18 holes.
"It's always exciting to get back to competing in the spring after a little time off," Coach Clay Homan said. "It's even more exciting after winning our last event in the fall and being in the final pairing in three of our five fall events. The challenge is pick up where we left off and be at our best this weekend. The Gator Invitational is always a strong field and I am confident that our guys will be ready to go."
State is coming into the Gator Invitational 46-13 overall, with four Top 5 finishes. Thru 15 rounds this season, State averages a 291.40 team score per round which is on pace to be the best scoring average in school history. To say the Bulldogs are on fire is to put it lightly. The hot fall has propelled Homan's squad to 41 in Golfstat's latest poll.
The Bulldogs will be facing one of the toughest fields of the 2012-13 season, when they take the greens against five Top 30 teams. Included in that stacked field is the third ranked Florida Gators. Arkansas (12) will also join the field, rounding out the SEC teams competing in the SunTrust Gator Invitational. Other teams making the trip to Gainesville are: Florida State, Liberty, North Florida, Central Florida, Georgia Southern, South Alabama, Kennesaw State, Memphis, UAB, Lamar and Jacksonville.
MSU will look to junior Chad Ramey to continue his great season thus far, as the Fulton, Miss., native has nabbed three Top 5 finishes in the fall season alone. Junior Axel Boasson might only have one Top 5 finish, but it was a second-place showing at the Bridgestone that propelled the Bulldogs to a win. Both juniors have the team's lowest scoring average at 72.00.
Play at the Gator Invitational will begin at approximately 8 a.m. on both days. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.Fans who want to keep up with everything Bulldog golf can follow Mississippi State Golf on Twitter @mstateMG and on Facebook at facebook.com/mstateMG
