STARKVILLE, Miss. - Former Mississippi State football stars Anthony Dixon and Pernell McPhee will represent the Maroon and White in Super Bowl XLVII, to be played Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at 5:30 p.m. CT on CBS. Dixon's San Francisco 49ers will battle McPhee's Baltimore Ravens inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La., in the biggest annual sporting event in the world.
Dixon advanced to the big game after his team defeated the Atlanta Falcons, 28-24, in the NFC Championship Game Sunday in Atlanta, Ga. Dixon carried the ball once for four yards in the victory. In the regular season, the Bulldog ran 21 times for 78 yards and a touchdown. Dixon also scored a touchdown in last week's playoff victory against Green Bay.
McPhee advanced to the world championship contest after his team picked up a 28-13 road victory against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game in Foxboro, Mass. McPhee had a clutch pass deflection of Tom Brady that led to a game-sealing interception for the Purple and Black. The former Bulldog finished the 2012 regular season campaign with 21 combined tackles (18 solo) in 12 games, including 1.5 sacks. Last weekend in the victorious 38-35 double-overtime classic against Denver, McPhee sacked Peyton Manning, forcing a fumble Baltimore recovered.
