STARKVILLE, Miss. - For the second time in the last three semesters, Mississippi State's men and women athletes established their best combined grade point average over a 16-week session during the academic period that ended this month.

Bulldog athletes finished the 2012 fall semester with an aggregate 3.04 grade point average, the highest single semester grade point average in school history. The 3.04 GPA surpasses the 3.01 mark set last fall.

State's men's sport programs posted an all-time best 2.89 GPA for the term, while the women's programs averaged a 3.25 classroom mark, its second-highest average in school history.

Men's tennis and women's golf recorded the highest male and female team sport GPAs with 3.47 and 3.73 average grades, respectively.

Additionally, baseball recorded its highest GPA ever (3.39), while women's tennis recorded its highest team GPA in eight years (3.63). Football earned its third-highest grade average ever (2.65), while eight of the nine women's sports eclipsed the 3.00 mark.

Overall, 83 scholarship student-athletes made either the Dean's Scholar (3.5) or President's Scholar (3.8) list. In addition, 174 of the 282 scholarship student-athletes (62 percent) recorded a 3.0 GPA or better during the fall.

The MSU athletic academic office began tracking scholarship student-athlete grades for comparative purposes in 1993.
