STARKVILLE, Miss. - Nine members of the 2012 Mississippi State softball team were named 2011-12 All-America Scholar Athletes, announced this past week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. The nine selections ranked third in the Southeastern Conference.
"We're really satisfied that our team applied themselves in the classroom this past year," Head Coach Vann Stuedeman said. "It's a tremendous credit to their work ethic as well as the tireless effort of the exceptional Jillian Jones and our academic support staff."
Former Bulldog pitcher Misty Flesher picked up her third career All-America Scholar-Athlete honor, while current seniors Chrissie Rovtar and Kylie Vry tied Flesher's mark with one year left to play.
Picking up their second career honors were Bulldogs Sam Lenahan, Erin Nesbit, Jessica Offutt, Heidi Shape and Rachael Zdeb.
Rounding out the group with their first academic accolades was the trio of Julia Echols, Shelby Fisher and Megan Nesbit.
The award recognizes student-athletes who achieved a 3.50 GPA during the 2011-12 academic calendar. This year's record number of honorees gives Mississippi State 103 All-America Scholar-Athlete selections in school history.
Stuedeman's squad opens up its 2013 season at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, as it hosts South Alabama in a rematch of the 2012 season-opening victory. For more information on Mississippi State softball, follow the program at @MStateSB or like them at Facebook.com/MStateSB.
