STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State All-American defensive back Johnthan Banks was named one of eight national semifinalists for the 2012 Lott IMPACT Trophy, the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation announced Thursday. Banks is the first MSU player to be named a semifinalist in the nine-year history of the award, which is named after NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott and honors the student-athlete who has the biggest IMPACT on his team on and off the field.

A midseason All-American by six different media outlets, Banks is tied for first in the SEC with four interceptions (T-10th nationally) and is fifth in the league in passes defended. For the season, the Conerly Trophy nominee has been thrown at 53 times in man coverage, allowing just 32 catches for 326 yards (32.6 yards per game).

The first player in school history to be named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award, Banks ranks in the top 10 in the FBS among active players in career interception yards (320, 1st), interceptions (16, T-3rd), interceptions per game (0.34, T-6th), interceptions returned for touchdowns (3, T-6th) and pass breakups (25, T-8th).

This past Saturday at No. 9 LSU in Death Valley, the Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist allowed just one catch for seven yards out of six passes thrown his way in man coverage. The team captain also had a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry, while accounting for almost half (5-of-11) of LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger's incompletions.

IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. The award is unique because it represents the first trophy to give equal weight to personal character as well as athletic performance from a defensive college player and is the first national college football award based on the West Coast. The four finalists will be announced Nov. 28 and will be invited to the Ninth Annual Lott IMPACT Trophy Awards Ceremony in Newport Beach Dec. 9.
