Greensboro, N.C. - With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the Carolina coastline, the Mississippi State men's golf team turned in one of its best performances of the year at the Bridgestone on Saturday.

"I'm really proud of the way Axel played today," head coach Clay Homan said. "To make 14 birdies in 36 holes is awesome. I know our guys look forward to going out and fighting for our first win tomorrow."

The Bulldogs will go into Sunday only one stroke behind tourney leader Chattanooga. MSU has already finished second once this season; in the season opening Sam Hall behind Ole Miss. The Rebels are 12 strokes behind State in this tournament however.

Junior Axel Boasson carried State in all 36 holes of Saturday's first two rounds. The Iceland native leads the field at Grandover Resort with his 8-under-par. The 136 two-round score is two strokes better than second-place Chris Robb of Chattanooga.

State was anchored by Boasson's incredible day, but got a huge contribution from junior Chad Ramey's 2-under-par. The Fulton, Miss., native is tied for sixth in the field going into Sunday's final round.

The Maroon and White have a couple of players sitting tied for 21, with senior Robi Calvesbert and junior Joe Sakulpolphaisan. The pair notched a 147 for their total score on Saturday.

Rounding out MSU's scoring was true freshman Haraldur Magnus. The Iceland product placed tied for 35th on Saturday. Magnus shot a 5-over-par 149 in his two rounds at the Bridgestone.

State will tee off at 8:30 EST Sunday morning to finish the third and final round; baring any interference from Hurricane Sandy of course.
