TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- A short trip to Alabama resulted in big results for Mississippi State Saturday as both the men's and women's cross country teams recorded third-place finishes at the Crimson Classic.

In their final event before the SEC Championships in two weeks at Vanderbilt, the women tallied 96 points while the men posted 77.

Senior standout Renee Masterson (18:02.54) led the way for the Lady Bulldogs, finishing ninth in the 5K. Chloe Phillips (18:05.51), Katie Huston (18:21.03) and Jodie McGuff (18:22.75) also had strong finishes for the women, rounding out the Top 20 at 14th, 18th and 20th, respectively.

Overall, the Lady Bulldogs finished ahead of SEC foes Auburn (7th) and Ole Miss (9th).

"We're all battling fatigue and stress, but we rose above those circumstances and finished strong," Masterson said.

Seizing the 8K top finish for the men was Philip Johnson (26:11.17), who came in 12th for the Bulldogs. John Valentine (26:11.78) and Cameron Vernier (26:12.79) followed Johnson, crossing the line in 13th and 16th, respectively. Rounding out the Top 30 was Jacob Fuller (27th, 26:37.38) and Julian Duarte (29th, 26:40.91).

"We beat Tennessee, which was the primary goal for the men's team," Johnson said. "Auburn beat us by four points, so we'll be focusing on them for the next two weeks and at the conference meet."
The men placed above SEC foes Alabama, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

"Today we learned some important lessons that I think can carry us into a strong finish at SEC Championships," Phillips said. "We came back strong in the second half and need to use the good and the bad of this race to combine for our best possible finish in two weeks."
