Gulfport, Miss. - The Mississippi State softball team improved to 3-1 during its "Tour de Miss" fall exhibition schedule this weekend with a doubleheader sweep against Marion Military Institute. Both games, held at Harrison Central High School, were decided in less than seven innings by 10-1 scores.
In game one, senior left-hander Kylie Vry picked up the win after hurling four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. Junior Shana Sherrod finished the six-run affair by pitching the final two frames. The Vestavia Hills, Ala., native also hurled a scoreless fifth in game two, replacing starting freshman righty Jacey Punches. Punches gave up a hit and a run in the first four innings, fanning three MMI batters.
Junior catcher Sam Lenahan led the 20-run barrage Saturday, going 2-for-6 with a home run, double and five RBI. Fellow junior Georgia natives Erin Nesbit and Heidi Shape combined to go 4-for-12 with five runs and an RBI in the sweep. The junior outfielder duo of Jessica Offutt and Rachael Zdeb totaled four hits in six at-bats with four RBIs, two runs and a double.
Filling up the rest of the box score were the MSU underclassmen, who tallied six hits, five RBIs, four runs and a double.
Head Coach Vann Stuedeman's squad goes on the road one last time this fall this Sunday, Oct. 14, when they travel to Huntsville, Ala., to take on Stuedeman's older sister Les and Alabama-Huntsville.
