Lady Bulldog Newcomer Claims Consolation Crown At Roberta Alison
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In the final day of competition at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic Saturday, Mississippi State Lady Bulldog Sarai Flores posted a straight-set singles victory to take the consolation championship title of her draw.
Flores, a true freshman, finished strong in her second tournament wearing the Maroon and White, claiming the consolation championship in the Pink Draw of the tournament. Flores defeated in-state rival Alli Robbins of Ole Miss in a 6-2, 6-4 decision to clinch the title.
Alexandra Perper added to the Lady Bulldog's singles success Saturday with a solid 6-4, 7-5 victory in the seventh-place consolation match of the Crimson Draw against Belinda Niu of Northwestern. MSU newcomer Georgiana Patrasc, also playing in a seventh-place affair, continued the victory streak posting a 7-5, 6-3 win against Samford's Kristin Lewis in the White Draw of the tournament.
After making her way to the main draw final round of the Purple Draw with two consecutive victories Friday, Naomi Tran for the Lady Bulldogs failed to clinch the championship title of that bracket, falling to Georgiana Sellyn of Vanderbilt in a 6-2, 6-3 decision. Freshman Lien Van Geel also dropped her final match of the weekend in a tight battle, 7-5, 7-6(9) to Amy Lowther of UAB in the seventh place consolation match in the Green Draw.
To begin doubles competition, Patrasc and Tran of MSU won in the semifinal round of consolation play defeating Ronit Yurovsky and Amy Zhu of Michigan 8-4. The Lady Bulldog duo failed to clinch the consolation finals, dropping the match 8-6 to Ole Miss' duo of Marija Milutinovic and Iris Verboven.
Perper and Flores paired up against Laurence Porry and Kristina Schleich of Florida State in the semifinal round and Courtney Colton and Maggie Leavell of Vanderbilt in the third place consolation round of the Bronze Draw, dropping both matches 8-5.
Head Coach Daryl Greenan felt that the team learned some important lessons through this tournament. "The girls each played several tough matches this weekend. We need to continue to improve on some things to prepare for our next competition," said Greenan.
The Lady Bulldog's next competition will take place in Tuscaloosa, Ala. once against as the team participates in the ITA Southern Regional Indoor Championships. Updates on Lady Bulldog play will be available through hailstate.com and @mstateWT.
