TULSA, Okla. - It was a long and tough battle, but the 41st-ranked Mississippi State doubles tandem of Jordan Angus and Malte Stropp upset the sixth-ranked Tennessee duo of John Collins and Hunter Reese 8-5 Thursday night in the first round of the ITA All-American Championships. The tournament is the first major of the college tennis season.
The State doubles team was actually defeated in the final round of qualifying Wednesday, but received a Lucky Loser bid into the main draw late Wednesday night to face the third-seeded team from Knoxville Thursday. The win advanced Angus and Stropp to Friday's round of 16 where they will face 17th-ranked David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar of Wake Forest.
In singles action Thursday, senior James Chaudry won his first match in a walkover by default when his opponent was unable to play. Chaudry then faced No. 15 Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee (seeded 13th) in the second round, but fell in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Stropp began his day with singles before his doubles triumph. Stropp faced Washington's 13th-ranked and 11th-seeded Kyle McMorrow in the first round, dropping his match 6-3, 6-0. In consolation play, Stropp rebounded to defeat 50th-ranked Leandro Toledo of Minnesota 6-4, 6-2. The junior from Dusseldorf, Germany, will face Tennessee's 34th-ranked Hunter Reese in the consolation round of 16 Friday.
