Bulldogs Drop Tough Decision To No. 23 Tennessee
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Playing down a player the majority of the match proved tough against 23rd-ranked Tennessee Sunday afternoon as the Mississippi State soccer team fell 6-0 to the Lady Vols at the MSU Soccer Field.
The loss dropped MSU to 7-3-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the SEC. UT improved to 7-2-2, 2-1-1 in the league.
Tennessee put the winner in 16 seconds after the opening whistle off a Bulldog turnover. Kylie Bono intercepted the pass and slotted the ball to Hannah Wilkinson for the one-timer past MSU goalie Skylar Rosson.
Rosson made two saves in the match before being issued a red card on a challenge in the 19th minute. CC Cobb took the ensuing penalty kick for Tennessee, but sophomore CJ Winship dove to her right to deny the effort.
A minute later she knocked away a Katie Lenz effort, and Cobb's follow-up attempt was cleared off the line by freshman defender Addie Tomlin.
Winship, a Ridgeland native, made five saves in the contest.
State fought valiantly to equalize before the halftime whistle, but Tennessee increased the advantage to 2-0 in the 40th minute on the first of Iyana Moore's three goals.
"Tennessee is a very good team, and to go down a man early against a good attacking team like that is difficult," MSU head coach Neil Macdonald said. "I am proud of our team for the way they continued to fight. CJ made some unbelievable saves. She also did a nice job directing the back line and communicating with our players. We have to put this one behind us and get back to work next week."
Lenz opened the second half with a goal in the 54th minute that put the Lady Vols in front 3-0. Five minutes later, Gabby Santorio hit a shot from the top of the 25-yard box that deflected off a Bulldog defender and into the top corner of the net.
Moore added the final two goals in the 65th and 67th minutes.
The Bulldogs wrap a four-match homestand next weekend as they enter SEC Western Division play. State hosts LSU at 7 p.m. Friday before league newcomer Texas A&M comes to Starkville for a 3 p.m. kick on Sunday that will be televised by Cox Sports Television.
