FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Led by senior Robi Calvesbert's opening-round 71, the Mississippi State men's golf team ended day one of the Mason Randolph Championship with a 293, 10th-place effort.

The Bulldogs hovered around the top half of the leaderboard all afternoon, but struggled with the last three holes of Friday's opening-round. MSU finished with a 9-over-par for the first round, a score that was one stroke behind the Bulldogs' 292 opening-round card from the season-opening Sam Hall Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs recovered in that tournament for a runner-up finish.

"We didn't finish the round off like we should have," head coach Clay Homan said. "We had several players in good shape with just a few holes to go and left a lot of shots out there. Like in our last event, we'll have to come out sharp and make up some ground. We've been in this position before and we will have to go low the next two days."

Calvesbert, who is coming off a 14th-place finish, navigated through the first 16 holes easily with a 3-under-par and climbed as high as second on the leaderboard. The 17th hole presented a challenge for Calvesbert however, as he a double bogeyed the par-5. The Puerto Rico native's 71 is good enough for a 16th spot on the leader board.

Top-Dawg junior Chad Ramey ended his opening-round play with a 3-over-par, 74. Ramey's last performance was a career-best fourth-place outing, which gave him his team-leading fifth-career Top-10 finish.

Junior newcomer Joe Sakulpolphaisan carried a hot club to Franklin, Tenn., after the Thailand-product fired off a 69 and 68 for the last two rounds of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. Sakulpolphaisan continued his hot play with Friday with a 1-over-par 72.

Rounding out the rest of the Bulldog's tourney line-up was junior Axel Boasson's 5-over-par 76 and sophomore Fletcher Johnson's 11-over-par 82.

The Maroon and White will begin Saturday's second round with Johnson teeing off at 8:05 a.m., followed by Boasson at 8:14, Ramey at 8:23, Sakulpolphaisan at 8:32 and concluding with Calvesbert at 8:41.
