Trio Of Bulldogs Named Preseason All-SEC By League Coaches
STARKVILLE, Miss - The Mississippi State football trio of senior defensive back Johnthan Banks, senior defensive lineman Josh Boyd and junior offensive lineman Gabe Jackson were named to the 2012 Southeastern Conference Preseason Coaches All-SEC Team, the league announced Thursday.
A
2012 preseason All-American by Phil Steele and Athlon, Banks was named to the
first-team defense by the coaches, marking the seventh different time this
summer the Maben, Miss., native has been named to a preseason All-SEC first
team. The 2012 Bednarik Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List member was also
selected to the All-SEC second team as an all-purpose player, his third such
preseason honor for his special teams' work. Last season, Lindy's "Best Cover
Corner in the SEC" was the only cornerback in the conference to rack up at
least 70 tackles and record five interceptions.
Jackson was named to the second-team offense by the coaches after starting in
all 13 games at left guard and leading the offensive line with 67 takedowns. In
addition, the 2011 Scout.com sophomore All-America selection is a member of
three other preseason All-SEC squads after anchoring an offensive line that
reached the top 10 in school history for single-season marks in passing
touchdowns, passing completions, total yards and first downs.
On the defensive side of the ball, Boyd earned third-team honors after
registering 51 tackles in 2011. The defensive behemoth made his name behind the
line of scrimmage, collecting 8.0 tackles for loss and sacking the opponent's
signal caller 4.5 times for a loss of 29 yards. The Philadelphia, Miss., native
has also earned preseason all-conference recognition from Athlon (second team)
and Phil Steele (third team).
