STARKVILLE, Miss. -Mississippi State sophomore center Dillon Day was named to the 2012 Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List, the Rimington Trophy committee announced Tuesday. Day is one of eight underclassmen on the 51-man watch list for the award, given annually to the most outstanding center in college football.
An honorable mention freshman All-American by Scout.com in 2011, Day saw action in all 13 games, including nine starts at center. The West Monroe, La., native started the last eight games at center, grading out a champion in four games, including vs. No. 3 Alabama and the Music City Bowl victory against Wake Forest.
With the 6-4, 300-pound center in the middle of the offensive line, MSU gave up the fifth-fewest sacks in the SEC and helped produced a running back that finished fourth in rushing. Additionally, Day aided an offensive line that helped the 2011 squad reach the top 10 in school history for single-season marks in passing touchdowns, passing completions, total yards and first downs.
Should Day win the trophy, he will be honored at the Rimington Trophy Presentation banquet at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 12, 2013.
