All-American Johnthan Banks Named To Bednarik Award Watch List
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Already a preseason All-American by two publications and a first-team All-SEC defensive back by six media outlets, Mississippi State senior Johnthan Banks was named to the 2012 Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. Since its inception in 1995, the award is presented annually to the nation's top defensive player.
The only cornerback in the SEC last year to rack up at least 70 tackles and record five interceptions, Banks was named to the 2011 All-SEC second team by the AP and the All-SEC third team by Phil Steele. The Maben, Miss., native was a finalist for the Conerly Trophy and was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced October 29, and the three finalists will be unveiled November 19. The winner of the 2012 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show held on December 6. The formal presentation of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 1, 2013.
