Offense Starts Fast, Defense Wins Scrimmage Under Lights
On the first offense's first two possessions, Russell led 75 and 80-yard drives for touchdowns. The first coming on a perfectly placed 29-yard pass to Malcolm Johnson, who enjoyed a tremendous evening with five catches on the night. After another Russell-to-Johnson connection for a big gain on the second possession, Josh Robinson crossed the goalline from two yards out.
The defense settled down, forcing a string of three-and-outs for both the first and second offensive units. The second offense got on the board with a Derek Milton 16 yard run and the first offense added a field goal to close the first half scoring.
After a two-minute situation in which the defense stymied both the first and second offense, the groups watched the third units play for approximately 20 snaps. Running back Jimmy Perry scored for the 3s on a five-yard rush.
Redshirt freshman wideout Joe Morrow provided the offensive highlight of the night early in the second half, snagging a pass with one hand, spinning off a defender and outracing the defense for an 82-yard score. But the second half belonged to the defense as senior defensive back Darius Slay provided an outrageous sideline interception to stop the offense's next drive. It was one of three passes intercepted by Slay on the evening. After a missed field goal from 42-yards out, redshirt freshman DB Taveze Calhoun returned a fumble 40 yards for a score to close the evening's scoring.
Head football coach Dan Mullen missed the scrimmage after the birth of his daughter earlier in the day, the second child for Mullen and his wife Megan.
