Newsome and volleyball student-athletes from the league's 10 other volleyball programs have earned berths on the 2010 SEC Volleyball Community Service team, the league office in Birmingham announced Wednesday.
The senior from Florence, Ala., has been an active participant in numerous community service projects undertaken by the M-Club. She was a key participant in and served as the MC for this fall's Bully's Book Blitz program, encouraging and motivating Henderson/Ward Stewart Elementary School students to read. She also took part in the M-Club's annual Thanksgiving canned food drive, collecting, sorting and distributing canned goods for needy families in the Starkville community.
Newsome serves as an officer in the M-Club, an organization for MSU students who have earned varsity letters in athletics at MSU. Also a member of MSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), she served the past two years as a volunteer in Mississippi State's annual "move-in day" program, MVNU2MSU, helping move first-year State students into on-campus housing.
A star and fan favorite on the court, Newsome posted an SEC-leading and career-best 137 total blocks as a senior in 2010, and over the course of four seasons she established a Mississippi State career record with 406 total blocks.
