Both offenses struggled to score and were hampered by costly turnovers and penalties. The Maroon team, made up of mainly first-and-second teamers committed four turnovers in the hour-long scrimmage.
“We had too many turnovers and too many penalties on first down,” head coach Sylvester Croom said.”That’s something that was consistent in other scrimmages and it’s something we've got to get straightened out.”
Croom, who spent the first half of the scrimmage in the television booth and most of the second half in the stands, did not let a lack of production on Saturday cloud his opinion of the Bulldog offense’s progress this spring.
“I’m not judging anything based on today,” Croom said. “It's not a true picture of where we are. My idea of how we finish spring is how we finished the scrimmage on Tuesday."
Each offense had some positive plays on Saturday, including Relf’s 51-yard completion to Jamayel Smith and Tyson Lee’s 38-yard aerial to Brandon McRae. But each time an offense seemed to put together a drive, a penalty or turnover stalled the attempt.
After Smith’s long reception, the Maroon team fumbled a snap. Following McRae’s long catch-and-run, the White team was flagged for a penalty on first down.
The game did feature a pair of scoring opportunities, but redshirt freshman Eric Richards missed 52 and 57 yard field-goal attempts for the White team.
With the spring game, the Bulldogs finished their NCAA-allotted 15 spring practices having accomplished many of the goals set forth by the coaching staff.
“All in all I thought we had a good spring,” Croom said. “We just wanted to get out of this thing today pretty much healthy."
