BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Battling treacherous playing conditions, the Mississippi State women’s golf team competed in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship, which began after a four-hour delay due to heavy rains on Friday.

MSU challenged a course that allowed no team to shoot under-par to post a score of 33-over-par 321 at the rain-soaked Greystone Golf & Country Club.

“Today was just one of those days that we haven’t had the entire year,” Bulldogs head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “The conditions were completely saturated, but no excuses. We have 36 holes left to dig deep and show that we are Bulldogs.”

All-American Ally McDonald notched the top Bulldog scorecard with an opening round score of 5-over-par 77. McDonald fired consecutive birdies on holes 13 and 14 followed by three pars to end the day just two shots off the top-25.

Ji Eun Baik and Mary Langdon Gallagher each fired 9-over-par 81 rounds in Friday’s round. Freshman Baik was one of three Maroon and White golfers to claim multiple birdies on the day.

Rica Tse and Jessica Peng rounded out Brown-Lemm’s lineup with scores of 82 and 83, respectively.

Darkness ended the opening round of play with three teams remaining on the course, while No. 4 Arkansas has the lead at 6-over-par thru 12-15 holes. Janie Jackson of No. 7 Alabama is the individual leader with three holes remaining in her first round.

The three teams will finish their first rounds Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. CST, followed by the beginning of the second round at 10:00 a.m.

Live stats and post-round results will be available through Hailstate.com and GolfStat.com.
