STARKVILLE, Miss. – The No. 75 Mississippi State women’s tennis team competed hard against No. 7 Florida Friday evening at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, but eventual drop a 4-0 decision to the visiting Gators.

With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 9-11 on the season and 1-9 in the SEC. Florida improved to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Mississippi State will play its final home match of the 2014 season on Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs host No. 44 South Carolina for Senior Day. The match, originally scheduled for Sunday, was moved to 4:30 p.m. Saturday due to the threat of inclement weather. Live stats will be provided on hailstate.com.

State opened Friday’s match by testing the Gators in doubles. UF grabbed the first match complete at No. 2, where the Gators’ No. 20 duo of Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock down Rosie Dion and Timea Guibe of MSU 8-3. But MSU was locked in instense battles on the other two courts with UF.

Florida finally took the point when MSU’s 41st-ranked doubles tandem of Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran fell on court 1 to No. 37 Olivia Janowicz and Kourtney Keegan 8-6. Doubles play was then suspended with State’s duo of Petra Ferancova and Georgiana Patrasc locked in a 6-6 tie on court 3.

The Gators rode their momentum into singles play but not without a fight from the Bulldogs late. UF took a 2-0 lead when MSU’s Guibe was forced to retire, trailing 5-1 on court 3. The Gators then earned a victory on court 5, as Tran fell 6-1, 6-3 to 53rd-ranked Kourtney Keegan.

The Bulldogs would not go away easily, however, as UF was forced to work for their fourth and final clinching point, which came on No. 6, as Stefani Stojic bested State freshman Rosalinda Calderon 6-4, 6-3.

Singles play was suspended with the Bulldogs knotted in tough battles on courts 1 and 2, and still fighting on court 4. MSU’s 66th-ranked Patrasc trailed 6-3, 4-3 to No. 17 Brianna Morgan at No. 1. Perper was behind 2-6, 6-2, 4-2 to UF’s 10th-ranked Olivia Janowicz on No. 2. And Dion was giving everything she had in a comeback effort on No. 4, trailing 6-0, 5-3 in her contest with 104th-ranked Gator Belinda Woolcock.
