Greensboro, N.C. – Chilly conditions pushed back Saturday’s tee time by almost three hours, but senior Chad Ramey warmed up quickly to tie for eighth after the first round at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate.

Ramey finished the opening round from the Grandover Resort at even, only four shots back of North Carolina’s Henry Do for first place.

Mississippi State finished the first round in 10th place after firing off a 10-over-par 298. MSU sits 10 shots back of first-place UNC (288, E) going into Sunday’s final round.

“When you have a 36-hole tournament due to weather, it makes every shot that much more meaningful,” Coach Clay Homan said. “You cannot afford as many mental or physical mistakes, because you don’t have the opportunity to bounce back as much. We squandered some shots out there today, which means tomorrow we must come out and limit our mistakes and make some birdies.”

The Greensboro area was blanketed with a heavy frost on Saturday morning, causing the tee time to be delayed until 10 a.m. CST for golfers. Because of the time lost, tournament officials decided to change the previous three-round format to a two-round format.

Besides Ramey’s 72 card, the Bulldogs also received a great contribution from sophomore Ben Wood. The Florence, Ala., native turned in a 2-over 74, to finish the opening 18 holes tied for 22nd.

Seniors Joe Sakulpolphaisan (3-over 75) and Barrett Edens (5-over 77) finished tied for 36th and 56th respectively, with true freshman Ben Follett-Smith shooting an 8-over 80 to round out the Bulldog scoring.

Homan’s squad will play the final 18 holes Sunday, with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
