AUBURN, Ala. – As the second day of the ITA Southern Regional Championships got underway for Mississippi State women’s tennis, a Bulldog doubles team found great success, advancing to the semifinals of the main draw.
The 48th-ranked and fourth-seeded MSU duo of Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran opened play in the round of 16 and swiped a win against Stephanie Barnett and Katya Nakonechnaya of Nicholls State 8-3. The Bulldogs then competed in the quarterfinals, where they soundly defeated Michalla Kucharova and Reka Muller of tourney host Auburn 8-1.
Perper and Tran will meet the top-seeded and 23rd-ranked Auburn duo of Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfiefler in the semifinals at 9 a.m. CT Sunday.
State’s Georgiana Patrasc, ranked 76th in the country and seeded 5-8 in singles, also continued action Saturday in the round of 16. Patrasc contested a very hard-fought match, splitting the first two sets but ultimately dropped the affair to Danielle Spielmann of Alabama 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
After a lengthy rain delay, Perper also competed in singles consolation Saturday night against Petra Horakova of ULM, defeating her 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 16. The win advances Perper into the quarterfinals of that draw, where she will continue play on Sunday.
Due to the persistent rains Saturday, all doubles consolation matches for the tournament have been cancelled.
